It is important to pace yourself for the race.  The most important thing is to know you distance and your abilities.  Is this a race you should find a moderate clip or is this a flat out sprint.  You need to have both types of energy cells and know when to tap into them.  "I didn't know" is a poor excuse.  Check the lay of the land and know the distance you need to cover.  Give it your best effort and remember, the only time you are judging yourself against is your best effort - not someone else's finish time.
