Eating a good pizza is not about the toppings, many times it is about the quality of cheese and can definitely be judged on the quality of the sauce used.  Even if these things are average there is one thing that cannot be average, it's the crust.  If the bread isn't right I don't care how high you pile the toppings or smother it in cheese and sauce, the pizza is not a success.  The dough is the foundation, the cornerstone upon which great taste is built!  I had a slice two days ago where the everything above the dough was average but the dough was magnificent and I want that slice again.  I had another slice last night with a better presentation and well designed flavor scheme on top, but oh boy that dough was not bueno...  Get the foundation right - it makes all the difference.
